Likely delay in passenger traffic recovery due to setbacks faced by airlines in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: Passenger traffic in Malaysia’s aviation industry may face delays in recovery due to recent setbacks experienced by airlines.

MIDF Research noted that the delay in recovery is attributed to “aircraft delivery delays and shortages of parts and labour.”

The New Straits Times reported that the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), which operates Malaysia Airlines and Firefly, announced in August that it would cut capacity to manage “supply constraints”, as quoted, caused by delays in aircraft deliveries and a shortage in spare parts, among other issues.

MAG stated that the first half of this year (1H24) saw total seat capacity at 85%, with the “average load factor”, as quoted, increasing to 79%.

In contrast, passenger traffic in July reached 92%, with the international sector “outperforming”, as quoted, the domestic sector since November 2023.

ALSO READ: Aviation experts call for overhaul of Malaysia Airlines

The return and introduction of foreign airlines have supported the recovery of passenger traffic, bringing the total number of airlines operating in Malaysia to 71, with five more expected in the second half of this year.

MIDF noted that Capital A Bhd aims to reactivate 15 more aircraft and expects eight new deliveries, which will increase the company’s operational fleet from 82% in the second quarter of this year (Q2 2024).

In the recent quarter, the firm’s airlines, including AirAsia (excluding Cambodia), recovered 79% of their seat capacity, estimating a 90% average load factor.

“The group has projected that passenger traffic will recover to 89% in Q3 2024, supported by an 82% seat capacity recovery. Moreover, the high-yield environment presents additional upside, with the average fare rising to RM239 in 1HFY24 - up 34% above pre-Covid levels - as demand continues to surpass capacity recovery,“ the research said.

ALSO READ: Loke: Reduction in Malaysia Airlines flight frequency temporary measure

Capital A also projected that the US dollar-ringgit exchange rate assumption changed by five percent will affect financial earnings in 2024 by 10%.

“Its fleet was not significantly reduced during the pandemic, allowing it to focus on expansion and creating an opportunity to capitalize on the capacity gaps left by its competitors,” the note added.

Tax Matters – Improving the relationship between taxpayers and IRB

AN IMPROVED relationship between taxpayers and the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) will certainly reduce the cost of administering the tax regime and improve tax collection.

If taxpayers willingly pay the correct amount of taxes, the level of audit and investigation activity can be dramatically reduced. Tax audits and investigations are time consuming for taxpayers and usually leave behind a “bad taste” for them because most cases are settled with additional taxes and penalties.

What is happening now?

At the moment, taxpayers’ relationship with the IRB is a bit on the wane because of the slow release of refunds. The feeling among taxpayers is that the government is very keen on collecting taxes on time and promptly imposing penalties for late payments without reciprocating with prompt refunds. You cannot totally blame the IRB because the availability of funds is not under the control of the IRB but is subject to release by federal authorities. Adding to this problem is the reluctance for the board to allow tax setoffs in some cases.

Since there is a very high key performance indicator for the IRB to collect tax of RM197 billion, some taxpayers are noticing that, more than often, the tax authorities are not giving the benefit of doubt to taxpayers where there are grey areas. This results in more disputes and litigation, which is time-consuming and costly.

There is also a fear among taxpayers that if they approach the tax authorities for their view, and the answer is negative, is there a possibility that their cases will be opened up for audits. Consequently, taxpayers keep away from directly approaching the IRB.

Are the above perceptions true?

For tax refunds, improvements are noticeable lately with the federal authorities beginning to allocate more monies to the IRB to refund taxpayers. The situation must improve quickly to provide confidence that the tax system is fair to taxpayers.

On the matter of giving the benefit of the doubt to taxpayers on grey areas well supported by facts and the law by taxpayers, IRB officials should refrain from hastily issuing assessments.

In such situations, the relevant sections of the IRB should refer such matters to the headquarters to receive an independent view from officials not involved in the case. This should be communicated to the taxpayer, and the taxpayer should be allowed to adduce any additional facts and information that may be relevant to the officials reviewing the matter.

Effectively, this is a four-eye review within the IRB before an assessment is issued. The team at the headquarters should be unbiased and should not be influenced by the potential tax collection.

Taxpayers are unlikely to believe this until they see it in action. Although there is a dispute resolution panel (DRP) which deals with cases where assessments have been issued, it is a little late because the taxes have to be paid before you can go to the DRP.

The fear among taxpayers in approaching the IRB for its views on complex matters could be detrimental if they get a negative reply because taxpayers feel that they have exposed themselves to the IRB and an audit may subsequently follow on. The IRB should give assurance that approaching and consulting the board will not give rise to any detrimental consequence. The IRB should welcome such consultation.

When taxpayers approach the IRB directly and realise that there is an element of ignorance of law, additional taxes can be collected, but penalties must not be imposed although in law, “ignorance of law” is no excuse. However, if the taxpayer uses tax agents, then ignorance of law is not acceptable, and the imposition of penalties is unavoidable.

What should be done?

The IRB needs to work very hard in providing assistance in the form of education, notifications, announcements, public relations exercises such as meeting taxpayers, events and seminars provided free of charge, opening customer desks at all branches, and responding via telephones and emails to taxpayers’ queries, etc. The relationship will improve through greater interaction between taxpayers and the IRB.

Red Hat champions sustainable, green AI landscape in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Red Hat is spearheading efforts to promote sustainable and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Malaysia, addressing both environmental concerns and infrastructure challenges while fostering national collaboration.

Red Hat’s Rest of Southeast Asia general manager Albert Chai emphasised the importance of making AI “greener”.

“The processing power required for AI, particularly the graphic processing units, is massive. The energy consumed and the associated cooling requirements have significant implications for greenhouse gas emissions and global warming,” he stated.

Chai highlighted the open-source technology company’s commitment to improving AI sustainability by optimising hardware usage and exploring smaller, more efficient AI models. “By using platforms such as InstructLab, we can generate synthetic data, which allows us to train AI models with less actual data and thus reduce the overall power consumption.”

He said the company is also focusing on the broader scope of infrastructure and environmental impact.

“Data centres, especially those for AI, consume a tremendous amount of power and water. In Malaysia, the availability of cost-effective power and water, along with ample land, makes it an attractive location, but we need to manage this carefully to avoid worsening our greenhouse gas issues.”

Regarding Malaysia’s national AI roadmap, Chai underscored the importance of collaboration among industry, academia, and government.

“We are particularly passionate about enhancing cooperation in AI research and development and talent development. Our partnership with Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation and the expansion of Red Hat Academy are steps towards upskilling local talent,” he said.

Additionally, Chai said, Red Hat is contributing to building a robust AI ecosystem by working with infrastructure partners, AI application developers, and consulting firms. “AI is a team endeavour, and we are committed to strengthening this collaborative network.”

Chai advised businesses to prepare for the introduction of AI governance and ethical guidelines by implementing strong data governance practices. “Data classification and access policies are foundational elements of AI governance. Ensuring that these are in place helps manage the ethical use of AI.”

He also highlighted the need for robust operational policies and cybersecurity measures to address AI-specific threats.

In terms of Malaysia’s progress in AI adoption, Chai said the country is ranked 23rd in AI readiness according to Oxford Insights, which places it ahead of some Southeast Asian neighbours but behind others such as Singapore.

“We are keeping pace, but there’s no clear leader in the region yet,” he added.

Chai said that while Malaysia is advancing in predictive AI, generative AI remains a global challenge that no country has fully mastered.

Looking ahead, Chai outlined key AI trends, including the shift towards smaller, more efficient models and the rise of multimodal systems that process diverse types of data. “Responsible AI and ethical considerations will become increasingly important. The focus will shift towards ensuring AI systems are trustworthy and ethically sound,” he said.

Chai said Red Hat is already integrating AI into its product portfolio. “Our automation platform, Ansible Lightspeed, now incorporates generative AI to streamline tasks such as code creation for disaster recovery and enterprise workflows. This enhances automation capabilities significantly.”

He stressed that Red Hat’s platforms, including OpenShift, are well-positioned to support AI initiatives, making it easier for companies to implement and scale their AI solutions.

Malaysia holds potential in the AI domain, Chai said, and stressed the need for a well-defined AI strategy and the adoption of open-source practices. “Malaysia has the elements to succeed in AI. The key is to leverage open platforms, open practices, and open leadership to drive innovation and make AI a reality.”

Chai said Red Hat remains dedicated to supporting Malaysian businesses in their AI journeys as the technology continues to evolve, ensuring that they not only keep pace with global trends but also lead in sustainability and innovation.

Toll roads can be a pain in the neck. Nobody likes having to pay to travel down the highway. But a transponder can at least make the process easier. With this tool, you can zip down the road while an antenna at each toll plaza reads your transponder and automatically debits your account for the toll. Several companies offer transponders that work in an intrastate fashion, making it easier to…

Sorento Capital inks underwriting agreement with Alliance Islamic Bank for upcoming IPO

KUALA LUMPUR: Bathroom and kitchen sanitary ware solution provider Sorento Capital Bhd (SCB) signed an underwriting agreement with Alliance Islamic Bank Bhd (AIS) as part of its upcoming initial public offering (IPO) on the ACE market of Bursa Malaysia.

Managing director Loo Chai Lai said this underwriting agreement marks a significant step towards the company’s listing on the ACE market of Bursa Malaysia.

He said this will further strengthen its reputation and open doors to new avenues for growth.

“The Malaysian bathroom and kitchen sanitary ware industry is expected to be driven by the property market’s growth, fuelled by economic growth, rising population, urbanisation and rising affluence.

“Furthermore, our national economy is projected to grow by 4% to 5% in 2024. This favourable economic climate will further drive new property development and renovation projects, further bolstering the demand for our products.

“SCB aims to capitalise on these favourable market trends as bathroom and kitchen spaces evolve into extensions of our customer’s lifestyles and comfort.

“This will help us to maintain our position in the industry,“ he said.

SCB is involved in the marketing, distributing and selling of bathroom and kitchen sanitary wares.

The group offers a comprehensive product portfolio that caters to diverse customer preferences, including affordable and luxury options.

The well-established range of house brands includes the flagship Sorento, Mocha, Cabana and i-Born.

In addition to their house brands, SCB is the authorised distributor for foreign luxury third-party bathroom and kitchen sanitary ware products brands.

This includes the non-exclusive distributorship of the German brand Bravat and the exclusive distributorship of the Spanish brand Infinity in Malaysia.

SCB’s IPO includes the offer of 229 million ordinary shares, comprising a public issue of 155 million shares and an offer for sale of 74 million shares.

Upon listing, these represent 18% and 8.6%, respectively, of the company’s enlarged issued share capital of 860 million shares.

Of the 155 million shares in the public issue, 43 million will be available to the Malaysian public through balloting, 16 million will be allocated to eligible directors, employees, and contributors to the group’s success (known as the “Pink Form Allocation”), and the remaining 96 million shares will be offered via private placements to selected Bumiputera investors approved by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

“The proceeds raised through our public issue will be earmarked for the purchase of inventory, branding and promotional marketing as well as expansion of our dealer network and distribution reach.

“This strategic move is in line with our anticipated business expansion and aimed at extending our reach to a broader base of end-consumers through our dealers while strengthening our brand visibility,“ Loo said.

SCB is scheduled to be listed by the fourth quarter of 2024, with AIS as the IPO’s principal adviser, sponsor, underwriter and placement agent.

Promote Malaysia beyond Kuala Lumpur to tourists from India: Tourism Malaysia DG

KUALA LUMPUR: The government, relevant agencies, industry players and stakeholders must actively promote Malaysia beyond Kuala Lumpur, encouraging repeat Indian visitors to explore the attractions in Sabah and Sarawak.

Tourism Malaysia director-general Manoharan Periasamy said Malaysia remains a popular destination for Indian travellers, and more so with visa-free entry.

“Increased flight connections and direct routes from India play a crucial role in Malaysia’s efforts to boost its tourism sector by significantly reducing travel time compared to connecting flights, making Malaysia more accessible and attractive to Indian tourists.

“The availability of direct flights stimulates demand for travel to Malaysia, leading to a significant increase in tourist arrivals from India.

“Direct routes open Malaysia to a wider range of Indian travellers, including families, younger generations, and budget travellers, thus allowing Malaysia to target the Indian market more effectively with specialised marketing campaigns and promotions tailored to Indian travellers’ interests and preferences,” he told SunBiz.

Manoharan said the number of tourist arrivals from India to Malaysia has shown consistent growth. The significant increase can be attributed to various factors, including improved air connectivity, visa-free access and targeted marketing efforts.

From January to June this year, Malaysia recorded 537,493 Indian tourist arrivals, compared to 283,885 during the same period last year, representing growth of 89%.

Manoharan said increased air connectivity could also facilitate closer collaborations between Malaysian and Indian airlines and travel agencies, leading to joint promotional initiatives.

Air Asia has expanded its routes to connect second-tier and third-tier cities in India this year, including Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, Trivandrum, Calicut, Guwahati and Lucknow, and added two flights from Trichi and Kochi.

Furthermore, Air India will launch daily flights to Kuala Lumpur starting from Sept 15, adding to the existing 217 weekly flights, with 40,635 seats from India to Malaysia. The expansion will greatly improve connectivity from 17 cities in India to Malaysia, making travel more convenient.

Manoharan said the Tourism Ministry’s robust marketing strategy had led it to participate in many business-to-business and business-to-consumer events throughout India.

“To further promote Malaysia’s appeal to the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibition sector (MICE), Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau offers enticing incentive packages specifically for MICE operators.

“By partnering with product providers and state tourism boards, we extend these attractive incentives to MICE operators and wedding planners, highlighting Malaysia’s diverse offerings,“ Manoharan said.

He said the Tourism Ministry is focusing on high-impact and fast conversion strategies and aims to collaborate with airline operators such as Scoot and Indigo under the International and Charter Flights Matching Grant.

The ministry will also partner with MakeMyTrip, India’s largest online travel agency, and Thomas Cook, a prominent travel agency in India.

AI and sustainability at core of Open DC’s next-gen data centre in Delapan SBEZ

KUALA LUMPUR: Open DC Sdn Bhd’s data centre in the Delapan Special Border Economic Zone (Delapan SBEZ), Kedah, is set to be operational by early 2025, said founder and managing director Weng Yew Wong.

He said the next-generation facility is designed to meet the increasing demands of artificial intelligence (AI) and power-intensive workloads while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability.

“Data centres will continue to support AI-technology development by improving computing power, optimising energy consumption, and enhancing security and data management capabilities,” Weng said in an exclusive interview with SunBiz.

He said that although specific AI integration plans are yet to be publicly detailed, the company anticipates leveraging AI to optimise cooling, enhance power usage effectiveness and better integrate renewable energy. “We anticipate AI integration will lead to smart cooling systems, energy-efficient optimisation, resource management, and automated energy management.”

In scaling sustainability, he highlighted that the growing demand for AI data centres requires high power and water consumption.

“To address this, the company is scaling its infrastructure with sustainability as a guiding principle. Data centres are actively minimising their environmental impact and promoting sustainability through energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and advanced cooling systems,” Weng said.

He added that these efforts are aimed at balancing the need for increased capacity with a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Weng said addressing power and cooling issues is critical to successfully operating graphics processing units.

“To manage the increased power consumption from AI workloads, the company is implementing advanced cooling technologies, including direct-to-chip liquid cooling and indirect evaporative cooling. Innovative technologies like liquid cooling are transforming how data centres operate, significantly lowering energy usage,” he noted.

In reducing carbon footprints, he said, Open DC is committed to sustainability and has implemented several measures to minimise impact on the environment.

“By sourcing at least 80% of our energy requirements from renewable sources, the company aims to significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Our carbon emission reduction plan will be realised through the implementation of cutting-edge energy-efficient technologies,” Weng said, underscoring the importance of smart cooling systems and efficient infrastructure in achieving these goals.

He said the development of Open DC’s data centre in Delapan SBEZ will have a significant impact on the economy, as it will attract a large amount of national and international investment.

Open DC aims to leverage Malaysia’s position as a strategic hub in Southeast Asia and connectivity to solidify the company’s role as a key player in the regional digital infrastructure landscape.

“We see the role of the company in attracting regional players to put their workload and content in Malaysia to fulfil their regional traffic distribution objectives,” Weng said.

The partnership with DE-CIX Malaysia, an operator of carrier and data centre-neutral internet exchanges, underlines Open DC’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and developing robust digital infrastructure, he said. “Our ambition is to become the market leader in the creation of digital ecosystems centering on our strategically located data centres.”

Open DC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Extreme Broadband Sdn Bhd, currently operates four data centres – one each in Cyberjaya and Penang, and two in Johor.

Meta Bright posts improved fourth-quarter, full-year revenue and earnings

PETALING JAYA: Meta Bright Group Bhd achieved RM8.36 million in net profit for the fourth quarter ended June 30, 2024 (Q4’24), an increase of 41.86% from RM5.89 million posted in the same quarter last.

Revenue also saw an impressive surge, reaching RM48.56 million in Q4’24, compared to RM8.87 million in the same quarter last year.

For FY24, MBG’s net profit jumped by 35.51% to RM11.78 million from RM8.69 million in FY23. The strong increase in earnings was mainly due to substantial revenue growth, which increased more than threefold to RM102.92 million in FY24 compared to RM34.07 million in FY23.

The revenue surge was driven by the implementation of the group’s transformation strategy, including acquiring a building materials business, which added RM60.53 million, and growing leasing and financing, which contributed RM5.71 million.

Property development added RM6.3 million, while the energy segment contributed RM1.15 million. The hospitality segment, however, saw a slight decline to RM24.43 million due to lower room sales.

Meta Bright executive director of corporate and strategic planning Derek Phang Kiew Lim said the latest results are a testament to the successful execution of the group’s strategic initiatives.

“From our initial corporate exercises to transforming the company, diversifying into new business areas, and now entering an exciting growth phase, we have seen significant progress. Our targeted acquisition, expansion into energy and leasing, the materialisation of our property project, and the completion of our existing hotel renovation programme have all contributed to our strong performance in FY24,” he said.

Looking ahead, the Meta Bright board remains committed to enhancing the competitiveness of its hotel segment by further improving building facilities following the completion of the existing renovation programme while continuously seeking new property development opportunities to generate additional income streams.

The group has diversified its core businesses to include energy-related, equipment leasing and building materials, which are expected to positively impact future profits.

Although cautious about navigating the challenging business environment, the board remains optimistic about these industries’ growth potential.

“Our recent achievements underscore the success of our transformation strategy, setting the stage for the future development of Meta Bright, and as we move forward, we are confident that our diversified business portfolio will continue to drive sustained growth and value creation for the group,” Phang said.
