NEW YORK, Feb 3 — The New York Times reported yesterday that buying The Athletic had helped power the paper past its 10 million-subscription target years in advance, and the company is now aiming to grow by millions more subscribers.

The paper has been trying to diversify its offerings and has successfully launched subscriptions to cooking recipes or to a games platform structured around crossword puzzles.

CEO Meredith Kopit Levien said the US$550 million (RM2.3 billion) acquisition of the sports news platform The Athletic announced in January had pushed The Times past the symbolic 10 million subscription mark.

However, the company believes it would have reached that milestone well before its self-imposed 2025 target “on an organic” growth basis.

The Times said it now aims to have at least 15 million subscribers — not subscriptions — by the end of 2021.

Subscriptions would reflect a higher number as some readers pay for several of its products, but the company said it will begin reporting the total of individual subscribers.

The last target, 10 million, set in 2019, was for subscriptions.

Before the acquisition, the The New York Times had ended 2021 with 8.78 million online and paper subscribers combined, a figure up 16 per cent with a push from products not directly related news.

The Times announced Monday it had bought Wordle, the phenomenon played by millions just four months after the game burst onto the internet.

The company is looking healthy, with a growth of subscriptions and newspaper sales of 23 percent in the fourth quarter year-on-year, and 26 percent for ad revenue.

The Times has been among the rare legacy newspaper firms to maintain growth as readers turn to digital news, and has been focusing on online subscriptions for its news and related products.

After suffering for a long time from the decline in sales and advertising revenues of the print editions, the daily newspaper has managed to stabilise its situation.

Sales of the print newspapers fell by only 2 per cent in the fourth quarter, while advertising revenues jumped by 33 per cent. — AFP

Be creative, innovative in year of change and fluctuation

PETALING JAYA: The Year of the Tiger will be favourable to business segments related to technology, creativity, and enterprises that implement innovative business models, according to feng shui masters. Generally, this year of the Water Tiger indicates fluctuation, movement, and inflation.

Two feng shui masters give their take on what the Water Tiger has in store for businesses and investors.

JANE HOR’S FORECASTS

Feng shui master Jane Hor said the 2022 forecast was calculated based on the bazi reading at the start of spring or Li Chun, which starts at 4.58 am Friday (Feb 4).

“This year’s bazi only contains earth, water and wood out of the five elements. Also, this year contains much indirect wealth or fluctuating money, it is known as pian cai in Chinese – indirect translation means unconventional wealth, illegitimate wealth, or fortunate gain.

“It means people will be in a gambling mood. They want to make money fast and involve many speculations. There will be many people investing in gold and foreign exchange. Since people want quick money in 2022, we will see many scamming activities,” she told SunBiz.

She advised speculators to be cautious in investments. The stock markets will look gloomy in early 2022 but will get better after August.

“In the beginning of spring, the wood element is the strongest. Wood-related industries – such as plantation, medical, pharmaceutical, education, and furniture – will see good performance. These sectors will gain more if they are involved in exporting their products.

“Water element industries such as tourism, aviation, export and import, will start to get better after August or autumn. This year’s bazi contains many tigers, means many people want to travel. Aviation and tourism industries will start to get better after August too,“ she said.

Earth element industries such as construction, real estate and property-related, architecture sectors will remain stable. Large earth element businesses will become stronger, while small businesses will become weaker.

“Agriculture and livestock-related industries have to be careful because the harvest will not be good and there will be a disease that attacks livestock in 2022.

“Fire element industries such as e-commerce, IT, infrastructure, communications will be stable and there will be no breakthrough. These industries will experience system failure or bugs during summer.

“Metal element industries, such as banking, finance, entertainment, will beset by problems, there will be many mergers and acquisitions in 2022. At the beginning of 2022, the metal element industry will deliver surfaced excellence performance. In July, uncertainties will emerge and much confusing information will disrupt the market,“ she said.

Hor said 2022 is a year favourable to teenagers, where YouTubers will be one of the booming markets.

“Businesses that provide services and products for this segment, will be booming with sales growth. Meanwhile, the years 2024 to 2043 will be the women consumers’ market, businesses with products and services catered to women will see rapid growth,“ she said.

On Covid-19, she said things will become better after August as well.

“We have no negotiation power and have to live with Covid-19 in 2022. It will still be a challenging year, we have to co-exist with it. In 2023 the wisdom star will be in control, Covid-19 should start to diminish in 2023,“ she added.

LOUIS LOH’S FORECAST

Feng shui master Louis Loh said e-commerce, fintech, pharmaceutical, medical, education technology, food technology, and logistics will be booming in 2022.

On the stock market, Loh said the best-performing stocks will come from the technology and pharmaceutical companies.

“Based on Mother Earth Sutra, the Year of the Tiger seems to perform better than 2021 (Year of the Ox). However, sudden changes will occur at any time of the year. The sutra indicates that the six domestic animals, also known as all our assets and belongings, will suffer from losses. Simply put, things will look calm and nice on the surface, but do not be deceived by appearances because there is a hidden danger.

“In I-Ching reading, there will be a global market crash within 36 months from the start of spring or Li Chun. According to the bazi reading, inflation is imminent as it shows too much money was printed and circulating in the market but has no value. It means inflation will worsen this year.

Loh said the cryptocurrency and stock markets might have huge changes, hence he advised investors to increase cash flow and refrain from following the trend – for example, do not panic buy and sell.

“The majority of businesses here are SME (small and medium enterprises), they thought the business landscape will back to the pre-Covid time, it is impossible as things and consumer behaviours have changed.

“Especially as Period Nine is approaching. People have adapted to work from home, virtual meetings, and e-commerce. These are acquired habits in the last two years. Business models have to adapt to changes in people behaviours,“ he said.

In feng shui, Loh said, Period Nine starts from 2024 to 2043, which means fire element representing the technology and virtual era. It is a breakthrough period and the world is shifting to a new order, some business segments prosper some are failing.

Loh said businesses should adapt to new technology, new culture, and new market.

“It is a transition to period nine. Businesses have to be specific in everything they do such as creating content, conducting data analysis, and collecting consumer data.

“Non-fungible token, metaverse, and cryptocurrency will be matured in three years. If a business is willing to be connected to these areas, it will be a pioneer in its industry. Still, many businesses are still adopting a wait-and-see attitude. Augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, and extended reality will be a new world order. Businesses have to create for the future.”

Loh refers to the Mother Earth Sutra, Bazi, and I Ching or Yi Jing to calculate the forecast for 2022.

Editor's Note: This story originally appeared on The Penny Hoarder. If you shop on eBay, you know it can be a great place to find a bargain. But if you’re like most eBay shoppers, you’re probably not getting any cash back on your eBay purchases. What’s that? I could be getting cash back on eBay? Yes, although it’s getting trickier now that eBay is shutting down its own cash-back program.

Dollar restrained by risk revival, spread of rate speculation

SYDNEY, Feb 2 ― The dollar was carrying a couple of bruises today as Federal Reserve officials played down the chance of a half point rate hike in March and a rally in global equity markets tarnished some of its safe haven allure.

Stellar results from Alphabet after the bell saw that stock surge 7 per cent and lift Wall Street futures, benefiting risk sensitive currencies including the Australian and New Zealand dollars.

The euro looked steadier at US$1.1270 (RM4.73), having risen 0.3 per cent overnight and further away from last week's 20-month trough at US$1.1122. A break above US$1.2300 resistance would help counter the recent bearish trend.

The dollar was back at ¥114.70, after dropping 0.4 per cent overnight and away from last week's top at 115.68 which now marks major resistance. Still, it remains comfortably above key support around 113.47.

Reflecting that pullback, the dollar index eased to 96.272 and off its recent 19-month high of 97.441.

The euro got a lift from rising EU yields, with German 10-year yields hitting their highest since mid-2019 after lofty inflation readings stoked speculation the European Central Bank might have to tighten early.

“A surprisingly high inflation print in Germany has driven another leg up in euro-zone rate expectations, and while we don't expect a major shift at the ECB policy meeting on Thursday, the direction of travel appears clear,” said Jonas Goltermann, a senior market economist at Capital Economics.

Likewise, British 10-year yields reached levels last seen in early 2019 ahead of an expected rate hike from the Bank of England this week.

That saw the pound push up at US$1.3522 after three sessions of gains.

All this means the Fed is not the only hawkish central bank in town, restraining the dollar. Indeed, Fed officials have been pushing back against market talk they might hike by 50 basis points in March.

St. Louis Fed President James Bullard, a noted hawk, yesterday said he would argue for rate rises in March, May and June, but did not favour a half-point move.

Capital Economics' Goltermann argued the market was still underestimating how high US rate would have to go to rein in inflation.

Fed fund futures imply a peak around 1.75-2.0 per cent which would be very low by historical standards and would likely still leave real rates in negative territory.

“We think the terminal rate in the US currently discounted in money markets is too low, both in absolute terms and relative to equivalent rates elsewhere,” he added.

“This is the key reason why we think the greenback will eventually resume its rise.” ― Reuters

Google parent Alphabet nearly doubles annual profit

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 2 ― Google's parent firm Alphabet announced quarterly profits Tuesday that beat expectations and nearly doubled in 2021 ― after a booming holiday season for the online ads giant facing anti-trust scrutiny.

Google dominance online has powered it to new heights during the pandemic period, but has also left it in the sights of regulators around the world.

The tech giant had net income of US$20.6 billion (RM86.2 billion) on revenue that grew 32 per cent to US$75 billion in the final quarter of 2021, ending the year with a total of US$76 billion in profit.

That was nearly double theUS $40 billion annual profit reported for 2020, as the pandemic had already accelerated a shift to online shopping, working and learning that also benefited fellow giants like Amazon and Facebook.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai cited “strong growth in our advertising business... a quarterly sales record for our Pixel phones despite supply constraints, and our cloud business continuing to grow strongly” for the success.

In all, Google earned more than US$61 billion in advertising revenue, mostly from online search and its video platform, while its cloud business grew by 45 per cent to US$5.5 billion in revenue.

Alphabet's strong earnings come after Apple, another pandemic-era winner, reported record revenue last week as markets were jittery about tech's future as well as geopolitical risks like the Ukraine crisis.

However, regulators' scrutiny around the world is stacking up as one of the most significant risks for the Silicon Valley giant.

“Google has the biggest uphill battle in terms of antitrust issues among all of the Big Tech companies,” Third Bridge analyst Scott Kessler wrote.

“Despite Apple's bigger size and Meta/Facebook's bad publicity, Google is seen most at risk in terms of US antitrust law,” he added.

Retail ads help push growth

Just last week, a group of top US justice officials accused Google in lawsuits of tracking and profiting from users' location data, despite leading consumers to think they could protect their privacy on the tech giant's services.

These suits are the latest legal threats against Google and other US Big Tech giants, which have long faced probes and court cases but a lack of new national laws that would regulate their businesses.

The courts and legislatures are not moving fast. Two weeks ago, for example, Google appealed a European court ruling that upheld a €2.4 billion fine imposed by Brussels in 2017 for anti-competitive practices in the price comparison market.

Alphabet's expectations-beating results offered positive signals even as diminishing growth shadowed firms like lockdown lifestyle champ Netflix.

Netflix lost tens of billions of dollars in market capitalization last month ― but has rebounded ― after projecting growth of just 2.5 million subscribers in the first quarter.

Fortunes were quite different for Google, with Alphabet saying its board had approved a 20-to-1 stock split that would make shares more affordable to small investors.

The firm predicts that its growth will continue in 2022, with digital advertising expected to bring in more than US$171 billion to Google this year, or 30 per cent of the global pie, just ahead of Facebook.

“In the fourth quarter, retail was again by far the largest contributor to year-on-year growth of our ads business,” Alphabet CBO Philipp Schindler told analysts.

“Finance, entertainment and travel were also strong contributors,” he added. ― AFP

MUMBAI, Feb 2 ― India's Tata Motors, the owners of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands, reported a fourth consecutive quarterly loss on Monday, weighed down by higher commodity prices and the global chip shortage.

Microchips are a key component in car manufacturing but automakers around the world have been hamstrung by limited supplies due to semiconductor production cuts during the pandemic.

The Mumbai-headquartered firm reported a net loss of 15.2 billion rupees (RM849.7 billion) in the three months to December 31, it said in a statement, compared to a net profit of 29.1 billion rupees a year earlier.

“The auto industry continued to witness rising demand in most segments even as the supply of semiconductors remained restricted resulting in adverse impact on production,” Tata Motors' executive director Girish Wagh said in a statement.

“The semiconductor supply situation is improving gradually whilst inflation worries persist,” the company added.

Operational revenue slipped 4.5 per cent to 722.3 billion from a year earlier.

Retail sales for Tata Motors' British subsidiary, Britain's biggest carmaker Jaguar Land Rover, were “significantly constrained by chip shortages and low inventories” and fell 37.6 per cent year-on-year.

But the company's India business saw revenue rise by 43.3 per cent on the corresponding period, with sales up across all vehicle segments.

Its electric-vehicle arm reported a new quarterly sales high of 5,592 cars.

Shares in Tata Motors closed 4.04 per cent higher at the end of Monday's trade in Mumbai ahead of the earnings announcement. ― AFP
