When homeowners take out a mortgage, they want the loan to remain with one company — and when it doesn’t, customer satisfaction plummets, according to new findings from J.D. Power. Mortgages that originate and are serviced by one company get an overall customer satisfaction rating of 646 on a 1,000-point scale, according to the consumer research firm’s 2022 U.S.

Oil edges up ahead of Opec meeting despite recession worries

NEW YORK: Oil futures edged up less than 1% on Tuesday (Aug 2) ahead of a meeting of Opec+ producers this week that may not lead to a further boost in crude supply amid concerns a possible global recession could limit energy demand.

Brent futures rose 51 cents, or 0.5%, to settle at US$100.54 (RM448) a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 53 cents, or 0.6%, to settle at US$94.42 (RM420.73).

Also giving oil prices a slight lift were analyst expectations that US crude inventories declined by around 600,000 barrels last week.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies including Russia, known as Opec+, meet on Wednesday. Two of eight sources said a modest output increase would be discussed. The rest said a boost was unlikely.

Opec+ trimmed its forecast for an oil market surplus this year by 200,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 800,000 bpd, three delegates told Reuters.

“Energy traders are growing confident that Opec+ will resist calls for increasing their output,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at data and analytics firm OANDA.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February fed worries about global oil supply and sent prices soaring to near record highs. But with central banks raising interest rates to fight inflation, worries about slowing growth have eclipsed tight supply.

Surveys showed factories across the United States, Europe and Asia struggled for momentum in July as flagging global demand and China’s strict Covid-19 restrictions slowed production.

“These readings did nothing to mitigate the fears of recession,” said Tamas Varga at oil broker PVM.

Also casting a cloud over the market were worries that US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan will escalate tensions between the US and China. China put its military on high alert and said it will launch “targeted military operations” in response to the visit.

The US, meanwhile, imposed sanctions on Chinese and other firms it said helped to sell tens of millions of dollars' in Iranian oil and petrochemical products to East Asia. Washington is trying to raise pressure on Tehran to curb its nuclear programme.

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog said “good words” from Iran are not enough to satisfy international inspectors and he hopes Tehran is ready to be transparent about its nuclear program.

Analysts have said a nuclear deal with Iran could add about 1 million bpd of crude to world supply.

In Venezuela, meanwhile, outages disrupting the country's power and gas supplies to state-run energy firm PDVSA hit July oil exports, contributing to a 27% fall from the previous month. – Reuters

Stock trading platform Robinhood axes staff

Malay Mail

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 3 ― Robinhood yesterday said it is laying off nearly a quarter of its employees as inflation and a crypto market crash cripple activity on the stock trading platform.

Dismissal emails went out to 23 per cent of workers, referred to internally as “Robinhoodies,” in a cost-cutting move that the Silicon Valley-based company said will leave it with about 2,600 employees.

Internet giants whose business boomed during the pandemic have taken a hit from inflation, the war in Ukraine, supply-line trouble and people returning to pre-Covid lifestyles.

Robinhood earlier this year cut nine per cent of its staff, but that wasn't enough, chief executive Vlad Tenev said in a blog post.

“Since that time, we have seen additional deterioration of the macro environment, with inflation at 40-year highs accompanied by a broad crypto market crash,” Tenev said.

“This has further reduced customer trading activity and assets under custody.”

Meanwhile, financial services regulators in the state of New York yesterday announced that Robinhood's cryptocurrency unit will pay a US$30 million (RM133.6 million) penalty for failing to meet mandatory standards for cyber-security and fighting money laundering.

The failure “resulted in significant violations” of state regulations, said state superintendent of financial services Adrienne Harris.

Flaws at Robinhood Crypto meanwhile stemmed from “significant shortcomings” in management that included failure to foster “an adequate culture of compliance” with banking rules, regulators said.

Robinhood associate general counsel Cheryl Crumpton said the company is “pleased” the matter is resolved in a settlement.

“We have made significant progress building industry-leading legal, compliance, and cybersecurity programs, and will continue to prioritise this work to best serve our customers,” Crumpton said in response to an AFP inquiry.

Robinhood layoffs will be concentrated in operations, marketing, and program management, Tenev said.

“In the short seven years since Robinhood launched to the world, we have adapted to challenges and forced the financial industry to adapt to us,” Tenev said.

“We've overcome many obstacles and have emerged from each a stronger and more resilient company,” he said. ― AFP

Uber reports loss, but beats income expectations

Malay Mail

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 3 ― Uber reported better-than-expected revenue yesterday, fuelled by strong demand for its ride-hailing and food delivery services that have drawn a surge in drivers looking to offset inflation's bite.

Revenue more than doubled to US$8.1 billion (RM36.1 billion) in the three months through June, a 105 per cent increase, at a time when many tech companies are struggling to navigate global economic turbulence.

Still, the firm posted a net loss of US$2.6 billion, but investors shrugged it off and shares closed up about almost 19 per cent on Wall Street.

Uber primarily attributed the loss to the falling value of its investments in financially strapped companies such as Singapore's VTC Grab, US self-driving vehicle start-up Aurora and Indian food delivery service Zomato.

The ride hailing giant also reported it now has nearly five million drivers and couriers on its platform, a 31 per cent increase from last year.

Some 70 per cent of drivers coming to the platform said inflation played a part in their decision, as people look for additional income to offset price increases, the firm reported.

“We saw an acceleration in both active and new driver growth in the quarter,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said. “Against the backdrop of elevated gas prices globally, this is a resounding endorsement.”

Bumpy earnings season

Uber also notched gains in monthly active platform consumers, gross bookings and trips compared with a year ago, reflecting higher demand but also a higher number of drivers for its signature ride service and food delivery operations.

“We continue to benefit from an... increase in the on-demand transportation of people and things,” Khosrowshahi said.

“We intend to continue capitalising on these growth tailwinds.”

Analysts noted that the relatively robust earnings were well above expectations, a relief during an earnings season buffeted by inflation, economic uncertainty and the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Consumers are still moving to the Uber platform especially as travel, shifting to the office, and other post-pandemic trends take hold globally,” wrote analyst Dan Ives.

The California-based firm posted US$1.8 billion in revenue from its freight operations, and said income figures got a boost from a change in how it accounts for its rides business in Britain.

The latest earnings season has been marked both by investors being relieved when results weren't as bad as feared, but also backing away from companies with less clear futures.

Facebook owner Meta and messaging app Snapchat's parent company both saw shares fall after results showed their ad-driven models were vulnerable to the current economic uncertainty.

But giants like Apple and Amazon reassured markets last week with better than expected results on strong demand and sales. ― AFP

TNB looks to Southeast Asia, Europe for more RE projects

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd via its New Energy Division (NED) is focused on exploring new markets to grow its renewable energy (RE) portfolio by building capability and gain access to technology and market knowledge, president and CEO Datuk Baharin Din said.

TNB Renewables Sdn Bhd will focus on Southeast Asia – exploring new markets that include Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea and Australia – and Vantage RE Ltd will focus on the United Kingdom and Europe – with new markets that include Spain, Ireland and France.

“We are already bidding. We have submitted proposals in Ireland and Australia so far, some of which the results will be known within this year,” he said at the editor’s media briefing here today.

“As we speak, there are ongoing work on this,” he said, adding that on all the current bids, TNB is going alone, but is open to the idea of collaboration in term of funding with other Malaysian companies.

TNB is also eyeing Spain and France, Baharin said.

There is huge potential in Europe due to its green energy commitment, he said. “We are going in as investor as well as a utility player. We are going into countries that are matured and we can learn from (technology transfer) including the process of commercialisation.”

Vantage RE recently completed a £275 million (RM1.5 billion) financing exercise through refinancing of its Vantage Solar UK portfolio of solar power plants in the UK.

The 365MW solar portfolio comprises 24 ground-mounted solar PV plants across England and Wales, and makes an important contribution to the UK’s supply of clean energy.

Baharin said TNB intend to bring this technology to Southeast Asia and other potential markets.

He said NED’s strategy is anchored on moving into greenfield development of RE assets to increase returns and optimise funding through capital recycling as well as tapping into global capital markets for RE investments.

It also aims to increase participation in solar, offshore and onshore wind to potentially capture 14GW of RE capacity by 2050, he said.

Asked on the domestic market, Baharin said there are limitations. “The total RE you can get in current system is around 30%, with the existing grid capabilities. So, you can even talk about 700MW of solar power, but only for five hours.”

Hence, due to that, any country will limit RE capacity and for Malaysia is between 25% and 35%.

“Because of that technical limits, we have to be elsewhere if we want to grow our RE.” – Bernama
