Wall Street stocks close sharply lower

NEW YORK: Wall Street tanked in a broad sell-off on Thursday (Sept 21), as investor risk appetite was dashed by worries that the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) restrictive monetary policy will remain in place for longer than anticipated.

All three major US stock indices tumbled more than 1% and benchmark US Treasury yields

touched a 16-year peak the day after Fed chairman Jerome Powell warned inflation still has a long way to go before approaching the central bank's 2% target.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 370.46 points, or 1.08%, to 34,070.42, the S&P 500 lost 72.2 points, or 1.64%, to 4,330 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 245.14 points, or 1.82%, to 13,223.99.

All 11 major sectors of the S&P 500 lost nearly 1% or more, with real estate stocks suffering its biggest one-day percentage drop since March.

Interest rate-sensitive megacaps, led by Amazon.com, Nvidia Corp, Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc dragged the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq to their lowest closing levels since June.

Semiconductor firm Broadcom slid 2.7% following a report that Alphabet-owned Google's executives discussed dropping the company as a supplier of artificial intelligence chips as early as 2027.

The Philadelphia chip index shed 1.8%.

On Wednesday, at the conclusion of its two-day monetary policy meeting, the central bank left the Fed funds target rate unchanged at 5.25%-5.50%, as expected.

But revised economic projections, including the closely watched dot plot, showed interest rates will remain elevated through next year, dampening hopes for easing of policy before 2025.

“If you do have rates higher for longer, you have more strain on the system and more pressure on the economy,” said Thomas Martin, senior portfolio manager at GLOBALT in Atlanta. “It gives people another chance to say that the lag time of higher rates – which we're just starting to feel – might really bite.”

“We’re ratcheting up the possibility that we won’t get a soft landing,” he said, citing economic pressure from higher rates, along with student loan payments resuming, the UAW strike, a potential government shutdown, higher Treasury yields, climbing crude prices and a strengthening dollar.

An unexpected 9% drop in initial US jobless claims, to the lowest level in eight months, played into the Fed's notion that the labour market remains too tight, putting upward pressure on wages, and the economy is resilient enough to withstand higher rates for longer.

“Higher for longer” has become a common credo among the central banks of the world’s biggest economies as global policy tightening, in order to tame inflation, reaches its peak.

“The headlines this morning were quite something when it came to central banks,” Martin said. “All of them were hawkish.” – Reuters

Another record-breaking year for auto sector forecast

KUALA LUMPUR: RHB Research is expecting Malaysia’s automotive sector to deliver another record-breaking year if the monthly total industry volume (TIV) strengthens in the next four months.

In a note yesterday, it said strong deliveries in the second half of 2023 (H2’’23) will be supported mainly by marques with large outstanding backlogs like Perodua and Toyota, largely fuelled by Perodua Axia and Toyota Vios launches.

“August TIV of 72,000 brought year-to-date TIV to 502,000 units. August saw a strong month-on-month increase, mainly from the Japanese carmakers Honda and Toyota, which rose by 30% and 23%, driven by order backlogs.

The research house said its 2023 TIV estimate of 725,000 units parallels the Malaysian Automotive Association’s 2023 forecast.

Meanwhile, given that 2023 could be a second consecutive record-breaking year and based on the lack of catalysts to support high orders and deliveries, RHB Research said 2024 TIV will likely soften y-o-y, especially if 2023 TIV hits a peak.

“We are also expecting the backlog of major marques to gradually ease throughout the fourth quarter of 2023 (Q423). While stronger electric vehicles adoption may be an upside risk to 2024’s TIV, we do not think this will be significant enough to move the needle.

In a separate note, MIDF Research said there is room for 2023’s TIV to outperform projections, while near-term revenue visibility is solid given the existing order backlog.

“However, the recent round of analyst briefings has suggested that backlog order growth has started to flatten with initial signs of receding compared to March-June levels following a pickup in production to address the long waiting list previously.

“While we believe TIV momentum is close to peaking after record-breaking TIV (numbers) in 2022 with another potential new record this year, we do not expect a drastic fall at this juncture,” the report said.

Demand could be supported by improvement in labour market, income conditions and easing inflation, the research note said.

While a strong US dollar is a margin risk, it noted that non-national auto players have been raising prices since early this year. It is keeping a neutral call on the auto sector. – Bernama

Wall Street closes lower after Fed holds rates steady

NEW YORK: US stocks slumped on Wednesday (Sept 20) after the US Federal Reserve (Fed) held key interest rates unchanged as widely expected, and revised economic projections higher with warnings that the battle against inflation was far from over.

All three major US stock indices retreated in the wake of announcement, with interest rate sensitive megacap stocks Microsoft Corp, Apple Inc and Nvidia Corp pulling the Nasdaq down most.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 76.85 points, or 0.22%, to 34,440.88, the S&P 500 lost 41.75 points, or 0.94%, to 4,402.2 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 209.06 points, or 1.53%, to 13,469.13.

Among the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, interest rate sensitive communication services and technology suffered the largest percentage losses.

The Fed’s announcement was accompanied by its Summary Economic Projections (SEP) and dot plot, which sees an additional 25 basis point rate increase this year, peaking in the 5.50%-5.75% range.

The SEP projections also called for 50 basis points of rate cuts next year.

“It’s your standard Fed day volatility,” said Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group in Omaha, Nebraska. “Yet it wasn’t really a curve-ball event, because markets took things in stride.”

“This day has had a bull’s eye on it all month and now we can move past it,” he added.

The updated projections see the Fed funds target rate edging down to 5.1% by the end of next year, and to 3.9% by the end of 2025.

Since the Fed began tightening in March, core inflation has cooled. But its slow descent toward the central bank's 2% target has been slow and uneven.

The SEP forecasts inflation to drop to 3.3% by year-end, and to approach the central bank's average annual 2% target.

At the subsequent press conference, Fed chairman Jerome Powell tempered rosier economic projections with a warning that inflation has a long way to go before reaching that target.

“The Fed didn’t really rock the boat,” Detrick said. “They acknowledged the strength in the economy, which also lowered the number of cuts that were expected next year, implying higher for longer is likely the path they will continue to take.”

Marketing automation company Klaviyo advanced 9.2% in its debut on the New York Stock Exchange, the third recent initial public offering in recent days, following Arm Holdings and Maplebear Inc.

“It shows confidence is coming back to even have the large IPOS,” Detrick said. “It’s a sign that things are getting closer to normal which is something that is necessary at this stage of the business cycle.”

Maplebear lost 10.7%, while fellow recent debut Arm Holdings was down 4.1%.
